NASCAR Sprint Cup Series “Axalta ‘We Paint Winners’ 400”

Truex Jr wins at Pocono
Martin Truex, Jr. in Victory Lane at Pocono

After weeks of knocking on the door to Victory Lane, Martin Truex, Jr. finally pushed it open Sunday afternoon at Pocono Raceway. The driver of the #78 Furniture Row Racing Chevrolet had led the most laps in each of the last three events this season, but circumstances kept him from ending a winless streak that was approaching two years. That changed Sunday, when Truex once again led the most laps – 97 – and closed the deal on his third career Cup Series victory. It ends a 69-race winless streak dating back to June 23, 2013, in Sonoma, California. Truex’s margin of victory over runner-up Kevin Harvick was nearly a second-and-a-half with Jimmie Johnson finishing 3rd – giving Chevrolet a sweep of the top three spots for the second week in a row and the fifth time in the last six races.

Joey Logano placed 4th in a Ford with pole sitter Kurt Busch completing the top five … Harvick’s second-
place finish was his 8th of the season through the first 14 races in defense of his 2014 Sprint Cup championship. It came on crew chief Rodney Childers’ 39th birthday. Harvick leads the standings by 39 points over Truex. Harvick and Johnson are the only drivers with multiple wins this year as the regular season heads into its second half … After sweeping both Pocono races last year, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. was bidding to become the first driver to win three straight on “The Tricky Triangle” since Tim Richmond in 1986 and 1987. He fell short Sunday, coming home in 11th place.
