NASCAR Sprint Cup Series “Food City 500”

Matt Kenseth back in Victory Lane
Matth Kenseth celebrates in Victory Lane at Bristol

Matt Kenseth darted away from Jeff Gordon on an overtime restart Sunday night to claim victory at Bristol Motor Speedway, ending a 51 race winless streak dating back to September 2013. Kenseth becomes the first driver to win a Cup Series race from the pole position in “Thunder Valley” since Carl Edwards in 2008. For the second year in a row, Bristol’s spring race – scheduled to be run during the day – was pushed to prime-time by persistent rain. It did get started at early-afternoon, but only twenty-two laps were run before showers returned. The green flag flew again shortly before 6 p.m.  – some five-and-a-half hours after the scheduled starting time. Edwards showed his strength Sunday night by leading four times for 86 laps in his bid for a second straight spring win at B-M-S. But his night ended on a sour note when he got loose while racing side-by-side with Gordon and slid into the outside wall, which brought out the final caution and led to a 24th place finish for the Roush Fenway driver. That set Kenseth up to race for the win on the final restart, which he did after waiting out yet one more brief rain delay. He got the jump on Gordon, who then lost a position to teammate Jimmie Johnson before settling for third place. Ricky Stenhouse, Jr and Ryan Newman completed the top 5 … Kenseth led four times for 47 laps in his Number-20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, including the final 34 trips around the Tennessee half-mile … Sunday’s race included 21 lead changes among just 6 drivers.
